“A great new talent, a lovely voice” is how Angie Carter, Director of the Eyam Jazz Festival in the Derbyshire Peak District, described Alice after her debut at the event in 2003. Although it was her first jazz festival (and by the way, she went down a storm) Alice’s talent is hardly new. She’s been singing ever since she could hold a tune, at about two years old, and by the age of eight she’d landed her first gig as a session singer - in at the deep end as one of four kids providing backing vocals on a recording by Bill “Compo” Owen, from Last Of The Summer Wine, in a London studio. Since then she has sung in various styles, including pop, country and soul, in studios as widely spread as London, Derbshirey, Cheshire and Surrey.
Although Alice has not always sung full-time - she has been cabin crew and is also a trained fitness instructor - she has been involved in music whenever possible, mostly as a session singer. Her occasional live appearances, especially with her dad’s band The Back Seat Jivers, were always very well received, but it’s only recently that she has taken the hint and decided to devote more time to performing. Virtuoso guitarist Mick Rogers, of Manfred Mann's Earth Band, has played on studio sessions complementing Alice's vocals. In his opinion: “She’s too good to be stuck in a studio – she should be out there getting famous.”
Alice is an incredibly versatile singer and loves many styles of music. These days she is working hard on building a gigging and recording career with her own band, at the core of which is superb pianist Eugene Portman. The repertoire, sophisticated, romantic and very classy, is a rich blend of jazz, ballads, smooth soul and blues. It's mostly standards but interwoven seamlessly are quality originals in similar styles, some written specially for Alice by her father. Influences range from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Diana Krall to Dusty Springfield, Sade, Etta James and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Quality jazz-based popular music has received a welcome boost recently through high-profile young girl singers like Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone. Soon we could be adding the name Alice Harvey to that list.
